Non-Occupational Loss Control
Overview
According to the National Safety Council, the cost of off-the-job injuries is nearly twice as high as the price of workplace injuries. Yet more than forty percent of companies surveyed by the council do not have a non-occupational safety program.
Clearly, both businesses and employees could greatly benefit from programs that effectively address the causes and prevention of injuries outside the workplace. Being committed to the health and safety of workers means not only ensuring workplace safety but also establishing non-occupational safety programs that can help reduce clients non-occupational losses and them money.
An effective non-occupational safety program will not only reduce financial losses, but it will also improve the lives of workers, making them happier, healthier, and more productive.
Steps
Non-occupational safety programs should include the following important steps which CEM can assist with every step of the way:
  1. Analyze loss history and existing programs. A thorough review of non-occupational loss history provides a clear picture of how workers are being injured. CEM assists clients by examining their loss history and finding trends so that efforts to reduce loss can be focused and effective.
  2. Educate workers. The most effective way to reduce non-occupational losses is through education programs for workers. CEM assists clients by helping to design education programs that are cost-effective and well-received by workers.
  3. Develop incentive programs. Unfortunately education alone is not enough to significantly reduce non-occupational losses. Incentive programs are an effective way of encouraging the health and safety of workers.
